San Pedro Russell Nomura and Yoshiko Oest August 14, 2026
Date: Thursday, September 3, 2026
Time: 6:00 PM
Location: Intersection of 6th St. & Mesa St., San Pedro, CA
Celebrate the unveiling of Furusato: Home Sweet Home, a vibrant new artist-designed crosswalk by Lua Kobayashi that honors San Pedro's fishing heritage and the Japanese American community of Terminal Island. Inspired by the traditional Japanese art of gyotaku and the artist's family history, this colorful public artwork adds a meaningful new landmark to the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District.
The celebration begins at 6:00 PM at the intersection of 6th Street and Mesa Street with a lively performance by the Improv Taiko Drummers. After the unveiling, continue the festivities at Port Town Brewery, where you'll find a pop-up gallery featuring local artists and makers, fresh oysters from Holdfast Aquaculture, and more.
Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase commemorative T-shirts and tote bags featuring Lua Kobayashi's crosswalk design, locally produced by Calimucho. Merchandise and RSVP information are available through the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District.
Whether you're passionate about public art, local history, or celebrating San Pedro's vibrant creative community, this special evening is a wonderful opportunity to experience a project years in the making.
We love seeing public art transform everyday spaces into meaningful places that celebrate local history and culture. Projects like this honor the stories that shaped our communities while bringing neighbors together to experience art, creativity, and the unique character that makes San Pedro so special.
