About the Exhibit

The Malaga Cove Library Art Gallery welcomes the Redondo Beach Art Group for a thought-provoking exhibition exploring the concept of Mottainai. This Japanese word expresses deep respect for resources, urging us to value what already exists and minimize waste. The exhibition runs from September 25 to November 15, with an opening reception on Saturday, October 4, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

What Mottainai Means

Mottainai goes beyond recycling—it is about seeing the intrinsic worth in items, opportunities, and even moments that might otherwise be discarded. In art, this translates to upcycling and reclaiming materials to create something beautiful, meaningful, and thought-provoking. It’s a reminder to appreciate both tangible and intangible resources and live more mindfully.

Why You’ll Love It

This exhibition invites the community to experience how artists interpret Mottainai through color, texture, and form. You’ll see paintings and 3-D works that highlight creativity rooted in conservation and respect. The reception will feature light refreshments and a chance to meet the artists behind these inspiring works.

This is Why We Love South Bay Local

Events like Mottainai showcase how our libraries connect us to culture, creativity, and sustainability. By bringing together local artists and the community, PVLD transforms the gallery into a space for reflection and inspiration—making art accessible and meaningful for everyone.
