Showa Alley Brings a Taste of Japan to Gardena

Gardena Russell Nomura and Yoshiko Oest September 9, 2026

Date: Saturday, October 10, 2026
Time: 2:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Location: Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute – 1964 W 162nd St, Gardena, CA 90247

Experience a little bit of Japan right here in Gardena when Showa Alley returns to the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute on Saturday, October 10. Inspired by Japan’s post-war Showa era, the GVJCI breezeway will be transformed into a yokocho, a lively Japanese alleyway filled with the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of Japan.

Presented by GVJCI and the team behind The Shokudo Series, this year’s event will feature food, live entertainment, crafts, games, and raffle drawings throughout the day. Guests can also explore Takumi Alley, a collection of merchandise partners curated by The Shokudo host and chef Jon Kenzo Okeya.

Admission includes entry to Showa Alley, entertainment, a serving of a featured Showa-era dish, and a small gift from The Shokudo. Additional food, beverages, and merchandise will be available for purchase. Early bird adult tickets are $30 through September 10, with general admission increasing to $40 beginning September 11. Tickets for ages 3 to 17 are $15, and children under 3 are free.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute, The Shokudo, and Grateful Crane Ensemble. Onsite and street parking will be available.

We love events that celebrate the history and culture that make our South Bay communities unique. Showa Alley is a chance to experience Japanese food, entertainment, and traditions while supporting local organizations and the Japanese American community here in Gardena.
